Italian Espresso Nat'l Institute: we are going to ask Europe the Protected Geographical Indication

The Protected Geographical Indication is the only instrument to protect and defend the Italian espresso because it bounds it to its territory.

The board of directors of the Italian Espresso National Institute deliberated to proceed to the request for the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for the Italian espresso at an European level. With this decision, the Institute wants to reinforce the protection of the product, which is already made since more than ten years with a sensory certification.

"The PGI is the only way for a serious and effective protection action of the origin of the espresso - argued Gianluigi Sora, chairman of the Italian Espresso National Institute - The PGI involves a deep connection between the production and the territory of origin. Differently from other protection forms of the European Community, the PGI will guarantee to the customer that the espresso he or she is going to drink has been produced with only Italian coffee blends and with professional and made in Italy equipments".

"Coffee is the second commodity in the world and espresso, especially in these last years, has grown a lot on all the international markets - added Sora - But when we talk about the Italian espresso, its characteristics are well defined and are already protected by our production technical policy. We think it is time to reinforce this protection with the PGI".
